How to do traditional shaving

The History of traditional shaving

Many years ago when men first discovered shaving, the options for a safe, comfortable, and close shave were few and far between, some tribes close to the water even used clam shells to shave their beards. Fast forward to antiquity and Famous Macedonian General, Alexander the Great who actively encouraged his soldiers to cut their beards so that they couldn’t be grabbed by the enemy if it came to hand-to-hand combat. Alexander’s impact quickly made shaving more fashionable and razor technology took a leap forward making male grooming a big thing.

Traditional vs. Modern Shaving

Since the invention of the electric razor, the wet shave has fallen out of favor with some, but both traditional and modern shaving have their pros and cons.

Why choose traditional shaving? Traditional shaving can give you the closest possible shave – regardless if you are shaving with a straight razor, double edge, or even cartridge razor, a blade will always give you the shave that you want. Traditional shaving is very economical! Yes, you heard that right. The razors are sharp, inexpensive, and will last longer – and, there’s always something manly and pleasant about old-school shaving.

The pros of modern shaving are convenience and speed – you can simply flick a switch and finish your face in no time. The comfort! Electric shavers usually provide more comfort, less irritation, and no nicks and cuts to give you a guaranteed close and smooth shave.

How to do traditional shaving

  1. Start by washing your face – make sure to rinse it with warm water. This removes any unwanted grit and dead skin that can get in the way of having a smooth shave. When using a facial scrub to exfoliate the skin, gently rub it into the skin using small circles to avoid damaging it.
  2.

  3. After that, use shaving cream (we recommend our awesome DORCO shaving foam) to soften the beard and prepare it for shaving. Allow some time for the shaving cream to soak in for at least a full minute before you start shaving.

  5. Shaving BrushPre-soak your brush – if using a natural hairbrush, leave it in warm water for a few minutes to absorb the moisture. Your shaving brush needs to be damp, not soaking wet.
  6.

  7. Shaving creamLoad your brush by adding an almond-sized amount of shaving cream to the tip of your brush. This will help you to transfer the cream over your beard and facilitate a close shave.
